I've been in my new neighborhood for nearly two years, and one thing I enjoy is sitting on the back deck and hearing birdsong at midday. This neighborhood is quiet despite being 3 and 1/2 blocks from Interstate 84, one of Oregon’s two interstate highways.
But the freeway is below grade, in a canyon of sound walls, so effectively the "freeway noise" is little more than a neighbor's outdoor heat pump. And inside my insulated house, nothing. I don't mind the freeway. I use it often to quickly get across Portland. That personal benefit outweighs the possible negatives.
Other noise sources owe to our nearby hospital complex, an emergency room destination for screaming ambulances, or the overhead cacophony of a LifeFlight chopper descending to a rooftop landing. Even if I hear sirens or choppers in the middle of the night, I don't register them as "noise.” Immediately, the comforting thought crosses my mind: "Another life is being saved."
What I make of the sounds of a freeway and hospital emergency arrivals is mostly because of how my new neighborhood compares with what I accepted in the old neighborhood. How do these two neighborhoods differ? Well, the one I left was gentrification on steroids. Multi-story grand old homes—I lived in one—or spiffed-up bungalows.
The typical former neighborhood arriviste was unmistakably Trustafarian, or, say, an ex-division chief from one of America’s epic corporate implosions whose foresight managed an end run out, which spared him ever punching a time clock again, and way too many doctors, including doctor couples.
The money to burn needed an outlet. Much went into contracted remodeling/construction with headbanger musical accompaniment. Plus weekly arrivals of landscaping crews for an instant hubbub of lawnmowers, leaf blowers, and edgers running non-stop, mercifully over in the 30-45 minutes allotted that scheduled stop.
Of course, some flush neighbors had an appetite for DIY. A favorite was power washing for hours of aural hell. When I saw my serpentine lawyer neighbor, weaving back and forth, water-blasting concrete; I hypothesized justifiable homicide but was willing to settle for a karmic repetitive stress injury for life.
My new neighborhood, in contrast, has across-the-board average incomes with smaller homes or condos. The neighbors—more than a few are renters—don’t seem to take a roof over their heads for granted. And they don’t draw attention to themselves, tending to keep their noise to themselves. I’m grateful.
