Too many seem obsessed with getting and displaying a lifestyle of the rich. But is that neighbor with a remuda of pricey, white SUVs automatically rich? I don't think so.
No, being rich means acting rich. That almost anybody can pull together (or borrow or steal) the scratch for a status symbol brings to mind a scene from the 80s: A teenage neophyte cocaine dealer at a neighborhood convenience store couldn't figure out how to turn off the parking lights before he got out of his Rolls Royce!
But three persons I've known--all well-off--weren't conspicuous consumers. Nonetheless, each invariably acted rich. Acting rich, I'd assert, shows noblesse oblige (nobility obligates), a concept that the gift of wealth requires generosity. Surprisingly, what the three had in common was a willingness to unconditionally loan a car.
Dora learned of my close associate's thankless college summer job as a motel chambermaid. She proposed an upgrade. Receptionist at a commercial mortgage banker that originated loans for a major insurance company where Dora's father was a key executive. For the commute, Dora offered a Volkswagen for the summer.
Ian had a couple of decades on me and was an East Coast blue blood. He visited Havana in the 50s. An acquaintance suggested while there he call on the Brazilian ambassador's daughter. Ian, ready for their date, got a call: The young woman was backing out.
Later, Ian happened to be in a restaurant when he saw the young woman who'd stood him up. She was dining with someone else. And so Ian met a young Senator John Kennedy.
Ian loaned me a car, a well-worn Volkswagen Rabbit, when we were in a crunch with out-of-town guests and our car on the fritz.
Terence and I worked together, and you would never know by his habitually disheveled appearance he'd gone to an English boarding school.
Once I had to go to the home improvement store to buy some awkwardly large items that did not fit in my Miata. Terence loaned me his van.
His well-travelled van had side panels advertising a Jazzercise fitness club. I drove off in the van and realized it steered worse than a boat. With so much slop in the steering, I soon drove the right front wheel into a curb and burst the tire.
I called Terence, and he said, "Stay there." He arrived with his aging Volvo station wagon as a backup loaner vehicle. He would hear nothing about my paying to fix the tire and said apologetically, "I suppose I got used to how it steers."
Loaning cars, all three acted rich in the spirit of noblesse oblige.
