Shameless is a word increasingly that comes to mind as I look around and probably why I picked up Tamler Sommers' Why Honor Matters. Sommers, a professor of philosophy at the University of Houston, engagingly shows how we've turned away from pre-Enlightenment Honor cultures in favor of the rational, rules-based Dignity culture of Western liberalism.
In broad strokes, Sommers describes Dignity culture as idealized, abstract, and above all tolerant, but also prone to rationalized cowardice and irresponsibility. Still, if we are one planet's brother/sisterhood, then Honor cultures must be backward, just baggage to leave behind. Nonetheless, Sommers asserts Honor cultures are stubbornly real, tradition-inspired and infused with solidarity and motivation. Honor culture groups have each other's back.
One great example of the Dignity approach was Michael Dukakis, presidential candidate in 1988. Dukakis led Bush in the polls up to their second debate. Moderator Bernard Shaw asked Dukakis if he would favor an irrevocable death penalty if Kitty Dukakis, the governor's wife, were raped and murdered.
Dukakis replied: "I don't see any evidence that it's a deterrent, and I think there are better and more effective ways to deal with violent crime." Dukakis stopped leading in the polls soon after that answer.
Sommers wants us to imagine what might have happened if Dukakis gave an answer with some Honor culture values: "I don't think it's the state's business to end the lives of its citizens, no matter how heinous their actions. And I'll tell you something else: if Kitty had been raped and murdered, I wouldn't want the man executed by lethal injection fifteen years later, after dozens of appeals and legal challenges. I'd want to track down that son of bitch before the law could get ahold of him and kill him myself with my bare hands." I think Sommers makes the point that such a committed, even risk-taking, Dukakis might have had what Americans wanted to see in a U. S. President. Someone with a sense of Honor.
Why Honor Matters explores much more: from the dynamics of urban gangs, sports teams, men on the battlefield, to restorative justice initiatives that reintroduce the victim into the wheels of justice with victim confronting the convicted.
While Sommers candidly admits and suggests strategies for containing the dark side of Honor cultures [escalating acts of revenge], he believes, life is too complex, too messy for us not to want the best of both Dignity and Honor cultures.
